Well here’s a little Christmas present for you, a completely unplanned review!
This Christmas, my family has booked a house in Norwich so we can all get away and have a Christmas together, unlike last year. And as a further insight into why I am the way that I am, we also booked tickets to the Christmas show at the Hippodrome in Great Yarmouth on Christmas Eve, my mum’s birthday, because it has the UK’s only water stage and it looked a bit naff so we were intrigued. They say my generation is so steeped in irony that they are no longer sure if they actually like anything, but that’s been my whole life with my family. You merely adopted the irony, I was born in it.
Now, I don’t think it’s too out of order to say that Great Yarmouth is regarded as a bit crap at the best of times, but on Christmas Eve, when everything is closed, it’s certainly a bit more bleak. After winning enough tickets in the amusements to get whoopee cushion, we looked for somewhere to get a coffee before the show and we ended up in café that is part of the Hippodrome. To my delight, they had Christmas sandwiches! There was a Boxing Day Turkey Sandwich on the menu, but they had ran out of that so I had a Pigs in Blankets Panini instead.
Pigs in Blanket Panini with stuffing and apple sauce
The danger with putting stuffing in a panini is it can go soggy and turn everything into mush, but in this panini there was loads of stuffing so instead it got a bit crispy on the outside and I like that. My sister and brother-in-law also had the same sandwich, and my sister described the apple sauce as “like a McDonald’s apple pie” but I’m also okay with that, it was sweet, thick and chunky. It was a bit stingy on the sausage side, but a pleasant surprise on Christmas Eve.
And speaking of pleasant surprises on Christmas Eve, the Hippodrome Christmas Spectacular was actually pretty good! Except, ironically, for their unique selling point – the synchronised swimming, which really isn’t for me. Having your entire being riddled with irony and cynicism means your expectations are normally low enough to be pleasantly surprised sometimes. And I wasn’t even drinking!
Merry Christmas everyone!
